Newport River Group

Newport River Group – part of the Cam Upper Reaches Action Team (CURAT)

The group is led by a team of concerned and dedicated villagers, with specific interests and expertise, supported by volunteers who are able to help with various activities as and when they can.

If you would like to find out more and to become involved, we would be delighted to hear from you. Get in touch at newport.curat@btinternet.com  and tell us what areas of activity interest you the most and any specific expertise you have that may be of help with our work.

Newport River Group was set up in 2022 with the following aims

  • Restore the flow of the river
  • Reduce pollutants entering the water course
  • Educate residents of their impact on the water course
  • Restore habitat along the river (‘green corridor’)
  • Restore aquatic biodiversity within the river

We have set about doing this as follows:

Education – Watershed/Chalk stream ecology/Abstraction/Pollutants/Successful interventions by similar groups

Monitoring -Testing regime/Collection, collation, and distribution of data/Testing  Equipment/Funds

Collaboration – Farmers/Water companies/Access expertise (Also part of Education)/Local and national government bodies/Landowners/Others (schools, local organisations etc)

Physical intervention – Litter picking/Removal of invasive plants/Flow management/Lobbying/Supervised larger scale restoration projects

A stretch of the River Cam as it flows through Newport in Summer – it looks healthy enough, but is it? Where are the river creatures we should see – birds, wildfowl, fish, invertebrates etc? It can look good and be teeming with the life it should have, which is what Newport River Group is seeking to restore.
